“Clouds of Witness,” a Lord Peter Wimsey novel, is the best introduction to Wimsey and his world. Written by Dorothy L. Sayers, this novel revolves around Wimsey’s brother Gerald, the Duke of Denver, being accused of murdering their sister Mary's fiance. It also features Wimsey's friend Chief Inspector Parker, as well as introducing several recurring characters. Unlike “Unnatural Death,” where Wimsey seems more devil-may-care and speaks in more slangy sentences, this book shows a more mature Wimsey who's fully aware of his duties to his family and the responsibilities of his position in life (an occasional theme in the series), and we see that Wimsey is far from being merely a man about London. The mystery itself is one of the more clever ones in the series, revolving around holes in Gerald's testimony which Wimsey must investigate, as well as the background of the murder victim, although the final resolution seems not to completely justify the build-up. (This is common in Sayers' mysteries; the setting and characters tend to be stronger than the puzzle driving the plot.) Overall, though, it's an entertaining book, featuring more moments of dramatic suspense than in the later novels, making it perhaps the most well-rounded Wimsey adventure.

Amazon should be ashamed to offer this version of Clouds of Witness as a Kindle product. I am now reading the Kindle version with a hard copy of the book at my side so I can check to see what has been omitted. Sometimes it is just a couple of words that are missing, with the label of Garbled or Unclear added in the body of Sayers' text. Last night, it was an entire paragraph. I will never buy a Kindle edition again without checking the reviews regarding quality of the digital product. You should withdraw from sale this version of the novel. You should give all your unsuspecting readers a credit for another Kindle purchase.

Clouds of Witness Dorothy L Sayers 9781463782252 Books Reviews

One of the most famous detectives of the British Golden Age of Mystery is not a policeman, but the brother of the (fictitious) Duke of Denver, Lord Peter Death Bredon Wimsey. He is wealthy enough to do what he wants with his life, and has devoted himself to oenology, bibliophily, and criminology, i.e. wine, antiquarian books, and murderers.

"Five Red Herrings" (1931) follows "Strong Poison" (1931) in the Wimsey series and it is a relief to find that Harriet Vane is absent from this volume, since I have taken a strong dislike to her, but that's about the only positive thing I have to say...Okay, that's an exaggeration. The Scottish scenery is described beautifully, as you might expect in a mystery about a colony of painters.

One of the painters, Sandy Campbell, a bellicose drunkard appears to have fallen off of a cliff and drowned while out painting, but Lord Peter soon determines that the man was murdered. Whoever murdered him also painted the picture that was found at the crime scene, and was clever enough to paint it in the deceased painter's style. That immediately narrows the suspect list down to six other artists in the area, all of whom had a grudge against the surly Campbell.

Lord Peter instantly suspects the painters with the strongest alibis, and he and the police set out to eliminate the 'five red herrings' of the title and unmask Campbell's murderer. Unfortunately, this involves long, boring stretches of sorting through train timetables and figuring out how each of the subjects could get from Point A to Point B without being spotted. Naturally, all of the subjects seem to be lying about something.

If you enjoy working out timetables and poring over train schedules, "Five Red Herrings" is a fascinating mystery. However, I don't really read Dorothy Sayers' mysteries for the plots, but for the life she breathes into her characters. Lord Peter is a real human being with many flaws, including a tendency to revert to Bertie Wooster at his most vacuous. But I think Wimsey (in spite of being born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth) is the most lovable of all the great British Golden Age Detectives.
I love Lord Peter Wimsey and found 'Cloud of Witness' to be very enjoyable, but this particular copy of the book is absolutely terrible. I'm pretty sure it was printed on someone's home computer - the cover is blurry (it doesn't look that way in the photograph), the text is so small (I honestly got headaches from trying to read it) and there are huge spaces between each paragraph. Also, there is no publisher listed/mentioned anywhere in the book - only says 'made in the USA | Lexington, KY, with a date listed - the date I ordered it. It is obvious someone found the text of this book online, copied and pasted it into a word document, and then printed it off and had it cheaply bound. There are also piles and piles of typos - all symbols in the middle of words. I just want to warn you not to buy this copy of the book! It's a total rip off. I returned mine. This is so disappointing because Sayer's books are becoming harder to find in trade paperbacks, but I would highly recommend finding it used. (I left this same review on 'Whose Body' because I had the same thing happen with that book I ordered, too.)
Becoming a fan of the Golden age detective fiction, I decided to read Agatha Christie, and the woman who wrote this entertaining series ( Dorothy L Sayers), this being the second book in her well-known Lord Peter Wimsey Mystery series. It is a very entertaining read just like the first, and has a very puzzling whodunit to satisfy my curiosity. The second book begins with a court case narrative, as Lord Peter's brother Gerald (a.k.a. the Duke of Denver) stands trial for the murder of his sister's lover, a war hero named Dennis Catright. Lord Peter side his manservant/sidekick Bunter, and his police officer friend Detective Inspector Charles Parker determine to find the real culprit. The story has a very good puzzle and mysteries, no clues are hidden and all are discovered by the reader at the same time or Peter or his detective friend Inspector Parker find. There are a few twists to revealing who the murderer is, but it is very satisfying. If you like it good mystery, I would encourage check these books out. I have read the first one in the series and now this will be my second book.
Dorothy Sayers is a consummate stylist; her social commentary and dialogue are delicious. Don't buy this edition, though; as other readers have mentioned, it's so poorly done. Whole passages are garbled, with every other word missing. Here's an example

"'My lords, it is your happy privilege [missing] his grace the Duke of Denver these [mission] of his exalted rank. When the clerk [missing] address to you severally the solemn [missing] find Gerald, Duke of Denver, [missing] guilty or not guilty of the dreadful [missing] every one of you may, with a confidence [missing] any shadow of doubt, lay his hand....'"

I like guessing games, but this one greatly hampers progress through the book and completely eliminates any enjoyment.
How does allow such a poorly transcribed book to appear for sale after numerous reviewers, non of which I saw before purchase, point out the horrible job someone did transcribing this book to the format? Other than a money grab by a corporation that doesn't care it is hard to think of a reason, unless it is because (missing). The book is a piece of (garbled) and impossible to follow in this format.
